Can we do blush?

It's a common opinion that dark skinned girls should not wear blush. I disagree.

You're probably thinking - "No way. We're African - we don't even actually blush!" That's somewhat true - although those of us who are fair skinned can attest to our cheeks getting flushed in embarrassing or exciting situations (or maybe after a couple of cocktails).

Regardless of whether or not you visibly blush; You can definitely wear blush.

Three things to keep in mind - Formula. Shade. Placement.

FORMULA

If you have Normal to Dry skin: Go for a cream blush. It's easier to blend and looks a little more natural. Plus it adds a little extra layer of moisture.

If you have Normal to Oily skin: Go for a powder formula. It will last longer than a cream blush, which tends to migrate and fade on oily skin leaving it more shiny and oily.

SHADE

For darker tones (cocoa, coffee, chocolate): Pick a deep red, plum, bronze, or deep fuchsia tone.

For medium tones (mocha, brown): Pick a bronze, peach, light red, or medium pink.

For lighter tones (vanilla, butter, yellow): Pick a light bronze, pale pink, coral, or light pink.

PLACEMENT

Blush application should begin at the top of the apple of your cheek, and then blended outwards towards the ears. An easy way to identify the top of your apples; is to smile; this pushes the apples up, place the color on the part that lies directly below your pupil. Always remember, when it comes to blush: Less is More. Lightly dust or apply it and ensure to blend it into your skin for a more natural look.

BRONZER

If you're still a little hesitant about trying blush, opt for bronzer instead. Generally, darker skin tones do well with golden or bronze colors. Bronzer will give your cheekbones a subtle glow which adds a little extra to your look - especially if your foundation or powder leaves you looking flat.
Just remember to use a light hand as with blush, and lightly dust the bronzer on the top of  your cheeks, your hairline, and down the centre of your nose.

Have a little fun with your make up... Experiment and see what works for you but I guarantee once you find the right blush for you, you'll never look back.
